Boy versus Girl
Over the years the most common question I have received is not about specific health issues, not about training, or even about the temperament traits of my dogs. As a breeder, the most common question I have been asked is, "which is better - a boy puppy or a girl?"

How you raise, train and treat your puppy from the time he goes home is an important factor in what their ultimate personality is as an adult.  Each puppy has their own personality but is very moldable and trainable.  How you socialize them, have expectations of them, train them, all makes a very big difference in their lives.

It is important that you pick a puppy based on how you are expecting them to behave.

Also, consider the breed of dog you are considering adding to your family.  Smaller dogs (i.e. yorkshire terriers, chihuahuas) are dogs with huge personalities in little packages and have both of the male & female traits.  Larger dogs (i.e. golden retrievers, labradors) are very mellow and laid back whether boy or girl as that is part of their make up.

Boy puppies have a temperament that is closer to what most people envision when buying a puppy.  A male wants to always be with you and gain your love and approval.  They are always up for playtime, but when playtime is over they are also content to just sit with you.  They make great pets for kids that want a dog they can play with and become best buddies with. They are more outgoing, more accepting of other pets, and take quickly to kids but girls love kids, too. Most boys are easily motivated by food and praise, and so eager to please that training is easy. However, males can be more easily distracted during training. Boys who were neutered early (by 5 months of age) usually don't ever raise their leg to urinate. If you don’t get him neutered you will simply have to remain vigilant until he has been trained to only lift his leg outside.

Girl puppies are very unique in the dog world.  If you are wanting a puppy that will always want to be with you, you are better off with a boy.  Girls love spending time with you, they are very sweet natured and loving.   They can be very independent and want time out away from their human family.  They are very loving creatures, but they don’t need to be loved all the time.  They are very intelligent and know what you want, but often what they want wins out over what you want.   They can be somewhat moody, sometimes they will demand attention and then mere minutes later they will be in their crate not wanting to come out.  A female will not give blind obedience like a male will, they are just too independent and intelligent for that.  Females are very smart and not clingy.  They like to play games that make them think, such as how to get a squeaker out of toy or teaching you how to throw the ball endlessly.  Love obedience training.   If you want an intelligent dog a female is for you.

Dog owners who are adding an additional dog to their home should carefully consider the ramifications of adding a dog of either sex. This is important because the makeup of the existing pack may be more accepting to either a male or a female dog. The following are general tips for selecting the gender of a second dog:

  • If you already have a male or a female, a dog of the opposite sex is generally the best choice. Dogs of the same sex are more likely to fight than dogs of the opposite sex.
  • If you already have a male dog, he is likely to be more accepting of a female and you are likely to have fewer dominance issues if you add a female to the pack. However, if you opt to add another male to the pack, they can peacefully co-exist and may even become friends. It is important to closely monitor their interactions early on to ensure aggressive behaviors do not become common.
  • If you already have a female dog, she is likely to be more accepting of a male. Most males tend to be submissive. If he does not challenge your resident female, she is not likely to have a reason to fight with him. Adding a female dog to the pack, however, may result in complications. The worst combination of dogs is two girls because they are more likely to fight than a male and a female or two males. However, many dog owners have two or more girls that live together without problems. As long as there is an established Alpha dog and the other bitches know their place in the pack, there will not be dominance struggles often, although they may still occur.
